Why are sodium-dependent multivitamin transporters key?

Updated: Mar 17

Sodium-dependent multivitamin transporters (SMVTs) transport pantothenate, biotin, lipoate and/or iodide. Coenzyme A is synthesized from pantothenate. Acetyl-coenzyme A is synthesized from coenzyme A.

Acetyl-coenzyme A can acetylate histones. Histones that are acetylated allow chromosomes to unwrap allowing transcription of genes. Shortages of acetyl-coenzyme A could have wide epigenetic effects.

Synthesis of acetylcholine also requires acetyl-coenzyme A. See this article.

Increasing pantothenic acid levels is not straight forward. To increase pantothenic acid levels, coenzyme A levels and acetyl-coenzyme A levels see this post.
