Sodium bicarbonate combines sodium with HCO3- (bicarbonate). Bicarbonate where taken could increase activities of pyruvate carboxylase. Pyruvate carboxylase requires bicarbonate and manganese.
Sodium bicarbonate where taken could have pronounced effects on livers. Pyruvate carboxylase is highly expressed in livers. See this page.
Sodium bicarbonate should not ever by taken as an antacid and/or sports supplement and I underline ever. Taking sodium bicarbonate long term as an antacid and/or sports supplement could result in extraordinary requirements for manganese resulting in deficiencies of manganese. Deficiencies in manganese could dysregulate epigenetic mechanisms. See this post.
